
Martin Valcke (°1963) is the pianist of Elixir d’Anvers. His connections with the Art Deco music from the interwar period are his many years with this ensemble, and his mustache assortment. As a composer and arranger he also likes to explore the boundaries of art and distraction.
Bluenote was originally composed for piano solo with a children’s story, and was rewritten à la tête du client for Elixir d’Anvers. It is a French Valse Musette, with the appropriate harmonic turns, and with that typical fusion of joy and melancholy. It has only 1 theme, which nevertheless creates an ABA’ structure. The end is clearly announced, yet not fully completed. It’s processed grief that doesn’t have to have closure.
