Ludo Joly received his training at the conservatories of Leuven (cello) and Mechelen (double bass), where he was awarded the government medal for double bass and the Schevernels Prize. He then completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he obtained a higher diploma in double bass under M. Aerts and a higher diploma in chamber music in the class of A. Van Lysebeth.
For several years, he was the double bassist of the Flemish Chamber Orchestra in Brussels. From 1985 to 1992, he was a member of the New Belgian Chamber Orchestra. Since 1985, he has also been a member of the National Orchestra of Belgium, where he has been a soloist since 1992. In the meantime, he has collaborated with numerous ensembles and orchestras, such as the Orchestra of La Monnaie, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the VRO Orchestra, Collegium Brugense, I Fiamminghi, the Ysaÿe Ensemble, and Trio Grumiaux.
In 1990, he founded the chamber music ensemble “Piacevole,” which has since become one of our leading ensembles. From 1999 to 2007, he was a teacher of double bass and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. To this day, he is also a double bass instructor at the Conservatory in Leuven.
